What to Remember Before A Court of Splintered Harmony (ACOTAR Recap)

A Court of Splintered Harmony, the sixth A Court of Thorns and Roses book, is due October 27, 2026 from Bloomsbury. Before you start it, remember that Feyre is High Lady of the Night Court and Rhysand's mate, Hybern is beaten but Prythian's courts are still split, Nesta has rebuilt her life with Cassian and the Valkyries, Elain's mate bond with Lucien is unresolved, and Koschei the Deathless is waiting on the Continent.

Spoiler warning: this recap spoils all five published ACOTAR books, through the end of A Court of Silver Flames. The labeled Crescent City section near the end spoils the ending of House of Sky and Breath and part of House of Flame and Shadow. Nothing here guesses at book 6 beyond what Sarah J. Maas and Bloomsbury have announced.

Who this recap is for

If you read the trilogy when it came out, your memory of it is nine to eleven years old, and even A Court of Silver Flames is from 2021. Most returning readers remember the couples, not who made which bargain or why Koschei matters. This refresher keeps the parts that still count going into book 6.

One numbering note: A Court of Frost and Starlight was once labeled book 3.5 and now counts as book 4, which is why Splintered Harmony is book 6. Our ACOTAR reading order lists all five.

Book 1: A Court of Thorns and Roses (2015)

Feyre Archeron, nineteen, hunts to keep her poor human family alive: her broken father and her sisters Nesta and Elain. She kills a wolf that turns out to be a faerie, and the old treaty says her life is owed. Tamlin, High Lord of the Spring Court, takes her across the wall to Prythian, where his court lives under a curse set by Amarantha, a faerie queen who has seized the land.

Feyre falls for Tamlin, and when he's taken Under the Mountain she follows to free him, facing Amarantha's three trials and a riddle. Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court, plays cruel but keeps her alive. He heals her broken arm in exchange for a bargain: one week of every month at the Night Court. In the last trial she kills two innocent faeries, a guilt she carries into book 2. She solves the riddle, Amarantha kills her, Tamlin kills Amarantha, and the seven High Lords bring Feyre back as High Fae with a spark of every court's power.

Book 2: A Court of Mist and Fury (2016)

Engaged to Tamlin, Feyre is falling apart, and his protectiveness turns into control. When she panics at the altar, Rhys calls in the bargain. Later Tamlin seals her inside the manor with magic, and Mor, Rhys's cousin, gets her out.

At the Night Court she learns that Rhys protected Velaris, a hidden city, by letting Amarantha abuse him Under the Mountain. She meets his Inner Circle: Mor, the Illyrian warriors Cassian and Azriel (the spymaster), and Amren, an ancient being in a Fae body. The King of Hybern wants the Cauldron and the Book of Breathings to break the wall and retake the human lands.

Feyre trains her powers and learns that Rhys is her mate; he'd known for a long time, and they complete the bond. The mortal queens betray them and the team is captured in Hybern, because Tamlin made a deal with the king to get Feyre back. The king throws Nesta and Elain into the Cauldron and they come out High Fae, and Lucien announces that Elain is his mate. Feyre, named High Lady of the Night Court the night before, pretends her bond is broken and goes home with Tamlin as a spy.

Book 3: A Court of Wings and Ruin (2017)

Feyre turns Tamlin's people against him for letting Hybern in, then escapes with Lucien, who has broken with Tamlin to be near Elain. Along the way she learns that Helion, High Lord of the Day Court, had an affair with Lucien's mother, and works out that Helion is probably Lucien's real father.

In Velaris, the Cauldron has changed both sisters. Elain has become a seer, and Nesta can sense the Cauldron through a dark power she took from it. Elain's human fiancé, Graysen, rejects her now that she's Fae. The wall comes down, and Lucien goes to find Vassa, a human queen cursed by the sorcerer Koschei.

In the final battle the king kills the sisters' father. Elain stabs the king with Azriel's dagger, Truth-Teller, and Nesta beheads him. Rhys dies pouring his power into the Cauldron, the High Lords bring him back, and Amren, who released her true form in the battle, comes back in a High Fae body. Tamlin fights on their side at the end. A new treaty between faeries and humans is still to be written.

Book 4: A Court of Frost and Starlight (2018)

This short book covers the first Winter Solstice after the war and sets up what comes next. Nesta lives alone in a run-down apartment, drinking and avoiding everyone, and comes to Solstice only because Feyre pushes her.

Elain is grieving Graysen, avoids Lucien and grows quietly closer to Azriel. Lucien lives in the human lands with Jurian and Vassa, whose freedom from Koschei's curse is a temporary reprieve. Tamlin is alone in a broken court.

Book 5: A Court of Silver Flames (2021)

Book 5 belongs to Nesta and Cassian. After an intervention, Nesta moves into the House of Wind, trains with Cassian and works in the library, where she befriends Gwyn, a priestess who survived Hybern's attack on her temple, and Emerie, an Illyrian shop owner. The three revive the training of the Valkyries, an order of female warriors wiped out long ago.

The threat is Briallyn, the mortal queen who went into the Cauldron after the sisters and came out aged. Working with Koschei, and helped by Beron of the Autumn Court, she hunts the Dread Trove: the Mask, the Harp and the Crown, objects Made by the Cauldron that Nesta can find and use. Eris, Beron's heir, secretly works with the Night Court against his father. Feyre is pregnant, and the Inner Circle hides from her how dangerous the pregnancy is.

Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie survive the brutal Illyrian Blood Rite together. Briallyn uses the Crown to control Cassian, and Nesta destroys her. Nesta and Cassian accept they're mates. When the baby's wings make Feyre's labor go wrong, her heart stops, and Rhys, bound to her, would follow. Nesta uses the Trove and gives her stolen power back to the Cauldron to save them, keeping only her silver flame. The baby, Nyx, is born with wings.

Threads left open going into book 6

• Koschei. Still bound to his lake, he works through allies. The book 6 synopsis confirms he's stirring and his allies want the human lands.
• Vassa. Her reprieve from his curse is temporary.
• Elain. Her mate bond with Lucien is unaccepted and her closeness to Azriel is unexplained.
• Lucien. He has no court of his own, and the Helion question has never been settled with him.
• Eris. He wants his father's throne and hints that Mor knows more about their past than she's said.
• The Night Court. The official synopsis says its rulers are reeling from betrayals and revealed truths. It doesn't say which.

What's confirmed about A Court of Splintered Harmony

Maas announced the next books on the Call Her Daddy podcast in March 2026 and revealed the titles on Instagram that August.

• Release: October 27, 2026, from Bloomsbury.
• Structure: one story in four parts. Book 6 is part one, book 7 (A Court of Forgotten Melody, due January 12, 2027) holds parts two and three, and part four comes later. US retail listings add the subtitle "The Valkyrie Cycle Movement I."
• Plot: Koschei is stirring, his allies are moving on the human lands, and a divided Night Court has to rebuild old alliances.
• Narrator: not announced. Maas has said the point of view she found herself writing surprised her. Many readers expect Elain; that isn't confirmed.

Do you need Crescent City first?

Crescent City spoilers in this section. Maas's Crescent City series crosses into Prythian. House of Sky and Breath (2022) ends with Bryce Quinlan landing in Velaris and meeting the Night Court. House of Flame and Shadow (2024) opens there and spends a long stretch with Rhys, Azriel, Amren and Nesta, filling in ancient history about the Fae, the Cauldron and the Dread Trove, including a fourth Trove object, a horn.

Nothing announced says you need Crescent City for book 6. Skip it if you only care about the Night Court; read all three if you want everything the characters know. Throne of Glass, Maas's first series, isn't required reading for ACOTAR either.
