Spoiler warning: this recap spoils all four published Gods & Monsters books, through the last page of The Wrath of the Fallen. Nothing here guesses at book 5 beyond the date, publishers and premise that Kensington and Headline have announced.
Book 1: The Book of Azrael (2022)
A thousand years before the story opens, Dianna saved her dying sister Gabby by letting Kaden turn her into an Ig'Morruthen, a shapeshifting monster bound to him. She has served him ever since. He now wants the Book of Azrael, which may hold the way to kill Samkiel, and Samkiel's death would reopen the sealed realms.
Samkiel is the god king called the World Ender, and he's been hiding from his past under the name Liam. When Zekiel, a member of his order the Hand, dies on Onuna, Liam returns and captures Dianna. After her own side betrays her, they swear a blood oath: her help in exchange for Gabby's safety. They fall for each other on the hunt for the book.
Tobias, Kaden's lieutenant, gets to the book first. Dianna loses her heart in that fight, and Liam brings her back with his blood, breaking a taboo against resurrection. Then Kaden hijacks the screens, using dead news anchors Tobias controls, and kills Gabby on live television. The book ends with Dianna in her winged monster form, tearing loose in grief.
Book 2: The Throne of Broken Gods (2023)
Dianna spends this book avenging Gabby, going after Kaden's network while Samkiel refuses to give up on her. She learns two things that change everything after. She is the daughter of Azrael, and she is Samkiel's amata, his soul-paired equal.
Kaden turns out to be Samkiel's brother, with Isaiah and Nismera as family too. Members of the Council and the Hand betray Samkiel, he is chained and tortured, and a weapon made to kill him tears open the sealed realms. That lets Nismera come through.
Dianna gets him away, but Samkiel dies of his wounds. When she tells him she loves him, the amata mark appears and his heart starts again. They escape to the Floating City of Jade with the realms open and Nismera loose. What she doesn't tell him is the price: bringing him back cost Dianna her soul.
Book 3: The Dawn of the Cursed Queen (2024)
This one follows both leads, not Dianna alone. Nismera rules the realms and Samkiel is presumed dead while his powers fade. The healers of Jade City are poisoning him for Nismera, and soldiers seize him. Dianna's hunger is growing, and she hides the reason from him.
When he finally learns what saving him cost, he's furious and they split for a while. They reconcile and marry in New Rashearim, and their rings let them sense each other in danger.
Kaden then plots to erase Dianna's memories of Samkiel with a blade and traps her, with Isaiah's help. Samkiel takes back his full power, reaches her in time, kills Kaden with Oblivion and takes Isaiah prisoner. Death isn't finished with Kaden, though, and brings him back. Nismera learns Samkiel is alive and readies for war. On the last page, the ghost of Unir, Samkiel's father, seizes Dianna and pulls her into darkness.
Book 4: The Wrath of the Fallen (2025)
Samkiel and Dianna try to build a safe city and win allies among the realms, while he fears what Oblivion is doing to him. Gathrriel, the first Ig'Morruthen, takes over Dianna's body more than once.
Kaden comes back changed, and Death presses him to bring Nismera down. He kidnaps Miska, the young healer Dianna and Samkiel protect, which sets off a chase. Death also ties Dianna's life to Kaden's and Isaiah's: if one dies, all three do. Everyone is hunting a medallion that Camilla carries, and she gives it up to save Vincent.
Milani, Samkiel's former lover, goes after him with a blade meant to erase his memories of Dianna. Kaden and Isaiah learn that their sister Nismera has been using them all their lives, and they turn on her.
How the book 4 ending plays out
Dianna ends up Nismera's prisoner, and Nismera kills Reggie, the fate Roccurem, in front of her. Nismera then stages Dianna's public execution. Samkiel gets there and they fight, and when Nismera strikes at him, Dianna throws herself in front of it and dies.
Kaden and Isaiah feel it through the bond and crumble to ash. Samkiel loses control of Oblivion, which wrecks the palace and city and kills many innocent people. Nismera gets away. Cameron stops Samkiel, and the gods of Arcelia arrive and take them both away for questioning.
The last scene belongs to Dianna. She wakes in an apartment and Gabby, killed in book 1, walks in alive. Recaps place the scene in the past. Kaden and Isaiah arrive moments later, and that's where book 4 stops.
Threads left open going into book 5
- Samkiel and Cameron. Both are prisoners of the gods, held for questioning over what Oblivion destroyed.
- Nismera. She survives, with Samkiel apparently out of her way.
- Dianna, Kaden and Isaiah. All three are together with Gabby, the sister Kaden killed in book 1. Book 4 doesn't explain how they got there.
- Miska. Kaden handed her to Nismera in book 4, and the ending doesn't settle who has her now.
What's confirmed about The Fall of the Crowned King
- Date: November 24, 2026, in both the US and the UK.
- Publishers and formats: Kensington in the US (paperback and ebook), Headline, part of Hachette, in the UK (hardback, ebook and audiobook).
- Premise: Nismera faces a darker threat after her enemy's apparent defeat, Samkiel is alone with his grief and power, and Dianna, Kaden and Isaiah are stranded in another reality, looking for a relic that could get them home.
Book 5 may not be the last book
Headline signed a five-book deal in 2023, and US listings say "Book 5 of 5," which only counts what's been listed so far. Books of Brilliance cites a 2026 rights guide calling it a seven-book series, and a book blogger reports the same. Kensington's series page says the final war begins but doesn't call this the last book, and we couldn't find a statement from Amber V. Nicole herself.
The reading order is straightforward: books 1 to 4 in the order above, then book 5. The listings we checked show no novellas. The Kensington deluxe hardcovers of books 1 and 2 add a bonus scene. Kensington's editions of books 1 to 3 carry later dates than the years above, which is why you'll see 2025 and 2026 on them. Our Gods & Monsters reading order lists them all.
