Reread first?
Not the whole series. Knife and Killing Moon carry almost every thread that matters, and both are recapped below.

Spoiler warning: this recap spoils the whole Harry Hole series through the end of Killing Moon, including who killed Rakel in Knife and who Prim is. Nothing here guesses at Kill Shot beyond what Jo Nesbø's publishers have announced.

Thirteen Harry Hole books are out

The series so far, in the threads that last

Harry Hole is an Oslo detective with a gift for catching serial killers and a drinking problem that runs through every book. He has sober stretches, but the bottle keeps winning when things go badly. The people around him matter more to the late books than any single old case, so here's where they come from.

Rakel Fauke and her son Oleg are the center of Harry's life. After the events of The Snowman they leave Oslo, and in The Leopard Harry is wasting away in Hong Kong until his father's illness brings him home. In Phantom he comes back sober after three years away because Oleg, now using and dealing drugs, is charged with murder. The book ends with Harry shot, and the person who fired was Oleg.

Harry survives. In Police he's teaching at the police college and back with Rakel, and after that book he marries her and adopts Oleg. In The Thirst he's pulled back in to hunt Valentin Gjertsen, the one serial killer who got away from him, and kills him. Rakel spends part of that book in an induced coma, and Harry has bought the Jealousy bar, run by his school friend Øystein Eikeland.

The Oslo police people recur throughout. Katrine Bratt, a sharp detective from Bergen, joins Harry's team in The Snowman and rises to head the Crime Squad. Bjørn Holm is the forensics officer and one of Harry's closest friends; by the end of The Thirst he and Katrine are engaged and she's pregnant. Mikael Bellman becomes police chief and is corrupt, and Truls Berntsen is his thuggish childhood friend who keeps getting suspended. Ståle Aune is the psychologist Harry trusts with the minds of killers.

Knife (2019): Rakel's murder

Harry is drinking again and Rakel has thrown him out. He's stuck on cold cases, and Svein Finne, a serial rapist Harry put away years before, is out of prison. Valentin Gjertsen was Finne's son, and Finne has vowed revenge on Harry.

Then Rakel is stabbed to death in her house. Harry wakes from a blackout with blood on him and no memory of the night. Finne turns out to have an alibi. Roar Bohr, Rakel's boss at a human rights organization, is next under suspicion and is cleared too. With every other suspect gone, Harry is left facing the idea that he did it himself.

Convinced he's the killer, Harry drives off the road and his car goes into a river. He survives, and a test he asks forensic scientist Alexandra Sturdza to run on his clothes shows he'd been drugged. The truth is worse: Bjørn Holm killed Rakel. Bjørn had found out that Katrine's baby, Gert, was Harry's son from a night Harry spent with Katrine, and he punished Harry by taking Rakel from him. Bjørn kills himself.

Bohr shoots Finne in a trap Harry and the lawyer Johan Krohn set up, and Finne ends up with the blame for Rakel's death, which keeps Bjørn's crime hidden and spares Katrine and Gert. Harry leaves Oslo and lets a roll of the dice decide where he goes.

Killing Moon: Prim and the parasite

The dice send Harry to Los Angeles, where he's drinking himself toward the end. In a bar he meets Lucille Owens, a 72-year-old former actress who owes $960,000 to the Esposito family, a Mexican crime family. Harry gets her away from their enforcers once, but they catch up with both of them and set a deadline.

At the same time, two young women in Oslo, Susanne Andersen and Bertine Bertilsen, go missing and turn up dead and mutilated. Both were linked to a party thrown by real estate developer Markus Røed, who becomes the chief suspect. Through Krohn, Røed hires Harry to find the real killer, and the fee Harry names is the exact amount Lucille owes. He has ten days.

Katrine runs the Crime Squad and can't officially use him, so Harry builds his own team around Ståle Aune's hospital bed: Øystein, now a taxi driver dealing cocaine, and Truls Berntsen, suspended but still able to reach police files. A remark in Aune's ward about mice that lose their fear of cats gives Harry the key. The killer, known as Prim, has engineered a parasite that strips away fear and draws the infected toward him. Helene Røed, Markus's wife, becomes another victim.

Prim is Helge Forfang, Alexandra Sturdza's technician at the Forensic Medical Institute. Markus Røed was his stepfather and abused him as a child, and his revenge on Røed ends with Røed dead. In the climax Prim sets a trap for Harry while he has Alexandra. Aune, close to death anyway, takes Harry's place, and Prim injects him with a fatal dose of parasites before he realizes he's been fooled. Prim is arrested, Harry saves Alexandra.

Where everyone stands at the end of Killing Moon

  • Harry has stopped drinking again.
  • Rakel is dead. Harry still talks to her at her grave.
  • Oleg is grown, trained for the police.
  • Katrine Bratt heads the Crime Squad and is raising Gert. She doesn't want Gert or anyone else told who his father is, but Harry gets to babysit.
  • Gert is three and knows Harry as an uncle.
  • Bjørn Holm is dead, and officially Finne killed Rakel.
  • Ståle Aune is dead, after giving his life to stop Prim.
  • Truls Berntsen is still a suspended, compromised cop who helped Harry's team.
  • Øystein Eikeland is still Harry's friend and still dealing.
  • Alexandra Sturdza, who had grown close to Harry, survives.
  • Lucille Owens is safe.
  • Markus and Helene Røed are dead, and Prim is in custody.

Reviewers read the last pages as a hint that Harry hasn't seen the last of this kind of killer.

What's confirmed about Kill Shot

  • Release: November 5, 2026 in the UK from Harvill (Vintage), and February 23, 2027 in the US from Knopf, where it carries the subtitle A Detective Hole Novel. It came out in Norway in 2026 as Nådeskudd.
  • Translator and length: Seán Kinsella, who also translated Killing Moon. Both publishers list the hardcover at 544 pages.
  • Place in the series: Penguin UK calls it the fourteenth Harry Hole novel.
  • Premise: Harry has left the police and quit drinking. Around New Year in Oslo, people tied to the film business start dying in murders staged like famous movie scenes, and the victims trace back to an unfinished film called Final Cut. A newly appointed homicide investigator named Oleg Fauke, the same name as Rakel's son, asks Harry for help. (The US listing spells him Ole.)

If you came to Harry through Netflix, Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole premiered on March 26, 2026 as a nine-episode series with Tobias Santelmann as Harry. It adapts The Devil's Star, book 5, so it covers a much earlier case than the two books recapped here.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to read all the Harry Hole books before Kill Shot?

No. Knife and Killing Moon carry the threads that matter: Rakel's murder by Bjørn Holm, Gert being Harry's son, and Ståle Aune's death. The publishers say each Harry Hole book can be read on its own, though the late books land harder if you know the early ones.

What order should I read the Harry Hole books in?

Publication order, starting with The Bat (1997) and Cockroaches (1998), then The Redbreast through Killing Moon. English translations came out of order, with the first two books translated only in 2012 and 2013, so go by the series number, not the English release year.

When does Kill Shot come out in the US and UK?

Kill Shot is published in the UK by Harvill on November 5, 2026. Knopf publishes it in the US on February 23, 2027, as Kill Shot: A Detective Hole Novel.

Do I need to read The Bat and Cockroaches before the later Harry Hole books?

Not to follow Kill Shot. The Bat is set in Sydney and Cockroaches mostly in Bangkok, and many English-language readers started later in the series because those two weren't translated until 2012 and 2013.

How many Harry Hole books are there in total?

Thirteen are out, from The Bat (1997) to Killing Moon (2022 in Norway, 2023 in English). Kill Shot, published in Norway in 2026 as Nådeskudd, is the fourteenth.
