What Happened in A Monsoon Rising? Hurricane Wars Recap (2026)

BookBinge · 2026-10-07

What happened at the end of A Monsoon Rising?

A Monsoon Rising ends soon after Talasyn and Alaric hold back the Moonless Dark: during the celebrations, Oryal, a Nenavarene noblewoman Talasyn trusted, paralyzes her and injects her with sariman blood that drains her Lightweave, and Talasyn blacks out and is carried off, cut off from Alaric. That's the situation This Shattered Tempest (Harper Voyager, October 6, 2026 in the US) starts from: the Night Empress missing and powerless, and a couple the publisher says end up on opposite sides as their nations prepare for a final war.

The Hurricane Wars has three books

There's nothing extra to track down. Neither Guanzon's own site nor Goodreads lists a novella or bonus story, so publication order is the reading order. Our Hurricane Wars reading order page has the same list:

  1. The Hurricane Wars (October 2023)
  2. A Monsoon Rising (December 2024)
  3. This Shattered Tempest (October 6, 2026 in the US; October 8 in the UK)

If you read A Monsoon Rising when it came out, that's close to two years to fill in. Here's what you need.

Book 1: The Hurricane Wars (2023)

Years before the story starts, Lightweavers from the kingdom of Sunstead killed Ozalus Ossinast, ruler of Kesath. His son Gaheris destroyed Sunstead and every Lightweaver he could find, made Kesath the Night Empire and went to war with the rest of the Sardovian Allfold. That long war is the Hurricane Wars.

Talasyn grew up an orphan in Hornbill's Head and now flies for Sardovia, hiding that she's a Lightweaver. In the battle for Frostplum her friend Sol is killed, leaving his new wife Khaede widowed and pregnant, and Talasyn has to use her light magic in front of Alaric Ossinast, Gaheris's son and master of the Shadowforged Legion. She stabs him and gets away.

Sardovia's commander, Amirante Ideth Vela, sends her to train at a Light Sever in the Nenavar Dominion, a wealthy island matriarchy that has stayed out of the war. Coxswain Darius leaks the mission, Alaric follows, and Nenavarene soldiers capture them both, holding them beside caged sariman birds that shut down magic. Then Crown Prince Elagbi recognizes Talasyn as his daughter, Alunsina Ivralis, the heir to Nenavar's throne, lost as a baby during a civil war. When Alaric breaks out and they're fired on, her light and his shadow fuse into a protective sphere neither of them can explain.

She goes back to the war anyway, and within weeks the Night Empire wins it. The surviving Sardovians flee to Nenavar, where Queen Urduja, the Dragon Queen, agrees to hide them in the stormy islands of the Storm God's Eye on one condition: Talasyn stays and takes her place as heir, the Lachis'ka. In Kesath, Gaheris names Alaric emperor but keeps the real power as regent.

Four months later, Kesathese warships arrive with void cannons copied from a Nenavarene ship Alaric stole, and demand Nenavar's surrender. Urduja offers a marriage instead, and Alaric learns the heir he's marrying is Talasyn. Then Urduja explains the timing. Every thousand years a sevenfold eclipse makes the Void Sever erupt and kill everything it reaches, and this time it's expected to reach the Continent. The one defense anyone has seen work is the shield Talasyn and Alaric made together. You'll see the event called both the Night of the World-Eater and the Moonless Dark.

Negotiations, training and a lot of arguing follow. A young Nenavarene lord, Surakwel Mantes, challenges Alaric to a duel over the alliance; Talasyn steps between them, takes a wound and leaves Surakwel owing her his life. Alaric takes her to train at the Belian Light Sever, and the two grow closer than either wants to admit. They marry in Eskaya, and their wedding night starts as an argument and ends in an intimacy that leaves them both conflicted. Alaric flies home promising to look for Khaede, who has been missing since Sardovia fell.

The last chapter belongs to Gaheris. Kesath has captured a sariman, and he plans to use it to strip Talasyn's magic for good and take Nenavar.

Book 2: A Monsoon Rising (2024)

Both newlyweds are keeping secrets. Gaheris, ruling as regent, pushes Alaric to work out how a sariman can strip Talasyn's powers, and Alaric stalls without telling her the plan exists. Talasyn meets in secret with Vela, whose hidden Sardovians mean to bring down the Night Empire once the eclipse has passed.

Talasyn's coronation as Night Empress at the Citadel in Kesath goes badly. Sardovian fighters attack the ceremony, Alaric shields her, and she saves his life in turn, then carries the guilt of having fought her old side. Gaheris punishes Alaric with torture for putting her first.

Most of the middle is training and slow-burn romance. Their combined magic keeps failing, and the two keep getting closer while telling themselves it means nothing. A monsoon traps them alone together, they sleep together, and they agree it doesn't change the politics. Alaric also spends a long, drunken evening with Talasyn's father, Elagbi.

On the night of the sevenfold eclipse they finally get the merge right and hold back the Voidfell. It leaves marks: a black, twisting scar across Alaric's face and branching burn scars on Talasyn's arm. For a moment it looks as if they might have a future.

Then a celebration turns into an ambush. Assassins strike inside a sariman field that cancels both their powers, and the two fight without magic until it comes back. In the chaos, Oryal paralyzes Talasyn and injects her with sariman blood that drains the Lightweave out of her. Talasyn's last thought before she goes under is of Alaric, and she's carried off. The book ends there.

Where everyone stands going into book 3

  • Talasyn is missing, unconscious and stripped of her Lightweave. Book 2 doesn't say whether the loss is permanent.
  • Alaric is Night Emperor, scarred from the eclipse and still under his father's control.
  • Gaheris still wants Talasyn powerless and Nenavar under Kesath.
  • Vela and the Sardovians are hidden in Nenavar and still planning to overthrow the Night Empire.
  • Khaede was pregnant and missing when Sardovia fell, and Alaric promised to look for her.
  • The alliance between Kesath and Nenavar was meant to end the fighting and get both nations through the Moonless Dark. The second part is done.
