In Sarah A. Parker's When the Moon Hatched (2024), the assassin Raeve is saved from execution by Kaan Vaegor, King of The Burn, and learns she is Elluin Neván, the woman he lost more than a century ago. Spoiler warning: this recap spoils all of When the Moon Hatched, epilogue included. It spoils nothing in The Ballad of Falling Dragons: for book 2 you'll only find what Sarah A. Parker and her publisher, HarperCollins, have announced.

How many books will be in the Moonfall series?

Two Moonfall books are out: When the Moon Hatched (2024) and The Ballad of Falling Dragons (May 19, 2026). As of October 2026, Sarah A. Parker hasn't put a final count in writing, and HarperCollins has no title, date or listing for a third book. Our Moonfall reading order lists both books.

You'll see two numbers online. Several reading guides call Moonfall a trilogy, citing a fan's video of Parker at a May 2026 tour event, and a February 2025 ScreenRant article said five books without naming a source. We couldn't find either figure in a statement from Parker or her publisher, so treat both as unconfirmed. Nothing Parker or HarperCollins has announced calls book 2 the last one.

Five gods, three kingdoms and a falling moon

The prologue sets the rules. Five gods, the Creators, made the world and its dragons, and some of the Folk can hear the gods' songs and wield their elements. A dead dragon doesn't rot. It rises into the sky and hardens into a moon, and moons eventually fall. After seven moonfalls the other gods blamed Caelis, god of Aether, and locked him in the Aether Stone, a diadem that one royal bloodline must wear to keep him bound. As the story opens, a moon falls again.

Three kingdoms matter, and the Vaegor brothers rule all of them. Kaan rules The Burn, the hot country of the Sabersythe dragons, from his capital, Dhomm. Cadok rules The Fade, home of the Moltenmaws. Tyroth rules The Shade, the cold kingdom of the Moonplumes, where Arithia lies. Their father, King Ostern, rules The Burn in the book's past chapters.

Raeve in Gore: Essi, Rekk and the coliseum

Raeve lives in Gore, a city in The Fade, passing as a null (someone who can't hear the gods' songs) while she secretly wields air and ground magic. She's an assassin for the Fíur du Ath, a rebel group, though her handler Sereme controls her through a vial of her blood. The only ones she lets close are Essi, a young inventor she once rescued, and Nee, a parchment lark that has stuck with her for years.

Then Essi is stabbed in the Undercity and dies in Raeve's arms. Grief sets loose the Other, a violent presence inside Raeve, and she cuts through soldiers until Rekk Zharos, the Crown's bounty hunter and the man behind Essi's death, takes her prisoner. The Guild of Nobles sentences her to die in the coliseum, fed to Moltenmaw dragons.

A stranger who watched her trial turns out to be Kaan. At the execution the queen of The Fade drives the Moltenmaws back with wind magic, and Kaan's Sabersythe, Rygun, carries Raeve out of the arena and away to The Burn.

In The Burn, Raeve learns who she was

Raeve doesn't trust Kaan and runs. She ends up with the Johkull clan, who believe she fulfills a prophecy and make men fight for the right to claim her. She insists on fighting for herself, and Kaan arrives on Rygun to end the trial. To protect her, he gives her his málmr, a necklace that puts his future in her hands by making her his chosen heir.

In Dhomm, Kaan's sister Veya freezes at the sight of her. Raeve has Elluin Neván's face, and the court slowly makes it plain that she is Elluin: a princess of The Shade, Kaan's great love, gone for over a century. Raeve remembers nothing from more than about 23 years ago. A blind Mindweft named Vruhn tells her the answers are buried inside her, and a hidden forest home she once shared with Kaan brings back flashes of feeling, not memories she can name.

Then Kaan shows her where the title comes from. Slátra, Elluin's Moonplume, curled around her and became a moon with Elluin inside. Kaan believes Slátra kept her alive in that stone shell for a hundred years, until the moon fell and Raeve hatched out of it. He has spent years gathering the shards and rebuilding Slátra in a hidden chamber. Raeve refuses to accept any of it.

Elluin's diary explains why she left Kaan

Between Raeve's chapters run pages from Elluin's diary. She grows up a princess of The Shade, in the family that keeps the Aether Stone, and King Ostern wants her bound to his cruel son Tyroth. Instead she falls in love with Kaan, who wins her over slowly with meals, music and patience, then gives her a hidden home of their own and his málmr.

Then Ostern learns she's pregnant with Kaan's child. He threatens Kaan, Veya and Slátra unless she binds herself to Tyroth and passes the baby off as his. Elluin agrees, leaves Kaan a note full of lies that makes it look as if she chose Tyroth, and goes. That note is why Kaan spent a century believing she left him willingly.

How When the Moon Hatched ends

During Dhomm's dragon-mating festival, Raeve and Kaan stop holding back and spend the night together, though she treats it as pretend and still wants a way out. Then Rekk resurfaces, and Raeve tracks him to Bothaim, a neutral city. The Other takes over, and together they torture Rekk and kill him with fire.

Meanwhile Veya slips into Arithia in disguise and finds Elluin's diary. Its last entries tell her what Kaan doesn't know: Elluin was blackmailed, and her daughter Kyzari, who grew up believing Tyroth was her father, is Kaan's. The final entry suggests Elluin expected to die.

The epilogue belongs to Arkyn, the Scavenger King, a cruel figure from Raeve's buried past who called her his Fire Lark. He's holding Kyzari, who now carries the Aether Stone, and he wants The Burn's throne. He has her sign a blank parchment, folds it into a lark and sends it to Kaan. On the way it passes Nee, battered and bloodied, which lands in Kyzari's lap. The lark that followed Raeve for years was Kyzari's all along.

Threads to have fresh for book 2

  • Raeve's identity. She's been shown she is Elluin, but she hasn't got Elluin's memories back or accepted the life Kaan is offering.
  • Kyzari. Kaan's daughter, the Scavenger King's prisoner, and the one now keeping the god Caelis locked away.
  • Kaan. He still doesn't know Kyzari is his. Veya does.
  • The Other. Whatever lives inside Raeve has now killed for her, and she's afraid of it.
  • The moons. A moon has fallen after ages of calm, a sign that Caelis's prison may be weakening.
  • The brothers. Cadok and Tyroth still hold The Fade and The Shade, and Arkyn wants The Burn.

What's confirmed about The Ballad of Falling Dragons

  • Release: May 19, 2026, from Avon (a HarperCollins imprint) in the US and Harper Voyager in the UK, in hardcover, ebook and audiobook. It's already out.
  • Length: the US standard hardcover runs 576 pages.
  • Delays: it was first announced for October 7, 2025. In March 2025 Parker told readers she needed more time to get the book right, and the date moved again before settling on May 19, 2026.
  • Premise: Rekk is dead, but Raeve's hunger for revenge hasn't cooled, and neither have her feelings for Kaan. With a devastating moonfall on the way, she has to choose between chasing death and choosing a life. Kaan is trying to save his kingdom while his messages to allies go unanswered, rival factions close in with their own aims, and Raeve's forgotten past holds a secret that could upend all of it.

Keeping track of where you are

BookBinge is an iPhone app that keeps 333 series in reading order, Moonfall included, and remembers which book you're on. If you read When the Moon Hatched before you had the app, the "Already read up to here?" shortcut marks it finished without counting it in this year's stats. The AI recap is written only from the books you've marked finished and stops exactly where you stopped, so a spoiler-safe recap of book 1 says nothing about book 2.

BookBinge is free to start, with one free recap and up to three series active at once. Pro, at $24.99 a year with a 3-day free trial or $3.99 a week, adds unlimited recaps and Release Radar, a notification when a series you follow has a new book on the way, which helps while Moonfall book 3 is still unannounced.

Frequently asked questions

How many books will be in the Moonfall series?

Two are published: When the Moon Hatched (2024) and The Ballad of Falling Dragons (May 19, 2026). Sarah A. Parker and HarperCollins haven't announced a final count or a third book; the trilogy and five-book figures online trace to a fan video and an unsourced 2025 article.

When does The Ballad of Falling Dragons come out?

It came out on May 19, 2026, from Avon in the US and Harper Voyager in the UK, after moving from its original October 7, 2025 date. It's available in hardcover, ebook and audiobook.

Do I need to reread When the Moon Hatched before book 2?

Not if the ending is fresh. The parts that matter most are Raeve learning she is Elluin Neván, Rekk's death in Bothaim, Veya finding proof that Kyzari is Kaan's daughter, and the epilogue with the Scavenger King.

Is the Moonfall series finished after The Ballad of Falling Dragons?

Nothing announced says so. Parker hasn't named or dated a third book, but neither she nor HarperCollins has called book 2 the finale, and every report of her plans describes more books.

Who is Kyzari's father in When the Moon Hatched?

Kaan Vaegor. Elluin was pregnant with Kaan's child when King Ostern forced her to bind herself to Tyroth and pass the baby off as his, so Kyzari grew up believing Tyroth was her father; Veya learns the truth from Elluin's diary at the end of book 1.
